Think of it like this: innovation isn’t always a direct, linear path. Often, it involves a lot of trial and error, exploring different avenues, and discarding what doesn’t work.

Self-organization and self-correction are the inherent mechanisms within a system that guide this exploratory process, making it more efficient and ultimately leading to more robust and impactful innovations.

Self-Organization: Generating Variety and Possibilities

Self-Organizing Systems [1], by their very nature, tend to generate a diverse range of possibilities without explicit top-down control.

Here’s how this contributes to innovation through elimination:

Emergence of Novel Combinations:

When individual elements within a system interact based on simple rules, they can spontaneously form new patterns, structures, and behaviors.

In the context of innovation, this can lead to unexpected combinations of ideas, technologies, or processes that might not have been conceived through deliberate planning alone.

Think of how open-source software projects evolve, with numerous developers contributing diverse code snippets that eventually coalesce into innovative software.

Decentralized Exploration:

Self-organization allows for parallel exploration of different solutions or approaches. Various parts of the system can independently experiment and adapt, increasing the chances of stumbling upon a breakthrough.

This is akin to a diverse ecosystem where different species try out different survival strategies, some of which might prove remarkably successful.


Unforeseen Pathways:

Because self-organizing systems aren’t rigidly controlled, they can sometimes stumble upon innovative pathways that were initially overlooked or deemed unlikely. These unexpected discoveries can be crucial in radical innovation.

Self-Correction: Filtering and Refining Innovations

Once a variety of possibilities has emerged (partly through self-organization), self-correction mechanisms come into play to filter and refine them.

This is where the “process of elimination becomes most apparent:

Feedback Loops and Adaptation:

Self-correcting systems incorporate feedback mechanisms that allow them to assess their performance and adjust accordingly. In innovation, this could be through user feedback, market response, technical feasibility tests, or internal evaluations.

Negative feedback signals what isn’t working, leading to the elimination of less viable options. Imagine a startup iterating on its product based on customer reviews, discarding features that don’t resonate and enhancing those that do.

Error Detection and Mitigation:

These systems often have mechanisms for detecting and correcting errors or deviations from desired outcomes.

Natural Selection of Ideas:

Over time, through repeated cycles of experimentation and feedback, the less effective or less viable innovations are naturally eliminated, while the more successful ones are amplified and adopted.

This iterative cycle of generation and elimination drives progress and leads to the emergence of truly impactful innovations.

Consider the evolution of the internet. Its initial decentralized and open architecture (a form of self-organization) allowed for a multitude of applications and protocols to emerge. Over time, through usage patterns, security concerns, and market forces (forms of self-correction), some technologies thrived while others faded away, shaping the internet as we know it today.

In essence, by allowing for a broad exploration of possibilities and then rigorously filtering and refining them through inherent feedback and error-correction mechanisms, self-organizing and self-correcting systems provide a powerful and often more resilient pathway to impactful innovation through a continuous process of elimination. Self-organizing systems are characterized by their ability to spontaneously organize and adapt without centralized control, leading to enhanced efficiency and innovation.

Design Process of Elimination



The process of elimination is a cornerstone of effective design decision-making, serving as a critical tool for refining ideas and ensuring solutions are both innovative and practical.

Design is inherently iterative, requiring cycles of creation, evaluation, and refinement. Initial ideas are raw explorations, not endpoints. The first concept often emerges from immediate reactions to a problem, influenced by familiarity or existing solutions. While it provides a foundation, it rarely addresses all constraints or opportunities.

It often takes both passive and active effort for reaching a sound solution. Which is why brainstorming is useful for exciting passive efforts. Brainstorming yields diverse ideas, fostering creativity.

Think of it this way; The first concept anchors thinking (due to cognitive biases like the “anchoring effect”[2]), but subsequent ideas often challenge assumptions, leading to more innovative solutions.

Quantity here is strategic—it broadens the pool for evaluation.


The process of elimination is integral to transforming initial ideas into impactful designs. It ensures rigor, fosters innovation, and aligns solutions with user needs.

Embracing this process acknowledges that design is a journey of discovery—where the first step is vital, but the path forward demands continual refinement.

By systematically eliminating the suboptimal, designers arrive at solutions that are not just functional, but truly resonant.


[2 ] The anchoring effect is a cognitive bias where individuals rely too heavily on the first piece of information they encounter (the “anchor”) when making decisions, even if it’s irrelevant. 

This initial anchor significantly influences subsequent judgments and estimates, often causing people to make decisions that are skewed towards the anchor, even when better information is available.

These tasks highlight the diverse responsibilities of graphic designers in creating effective visual communications across various media.

Preparing Files for Production: Ensuring designs are correctly formatted and meet specifications for printing or digital deployment.

Designing Visual Concepts: Developing ideas that effectively communicate messages through visual elements.

Creating Layouts: Arranging text, images, and other elements to produce cohesive designs for various media, including print and digital platforms.

Selecting Typography: Choosing appropriate fonts and typefaces to enhance readability and convey the desired tone.

Choosing Color Schemes: Applying color theory to select palettes that evoke specific emotions and align with brand identities.

Image Editing: Manipulating photos and graphics, including tasks like retouching, background removal, and color correction.
